10 Writing Blogs You Should be Reading Right Now

If you are interested in writing - in any shape or form – then you would know that the search for The Annual Top 10 Writing Blogs is on.

Currently, people on Write to Done, and by people I mean Mary Jaksch and Leo Babauta are doing their best to encourage raging fans to come forward and nominate their favourite writing blogs.

Unfortunately, I can’t nominate my favourite one – and no its not Writing Happiness, although I am quite partial to it. It is Write to Done itself – too bad it can’t win or can it? hmm – I am pretty sure you can’t nominate a blog that is running the competition.

Anyway, there are plenty of other amazing writing blogs so I am compiling my own list and telling you why.

Of course, it is a matter of personal taste and interest, your choices would be different if you are more into creative or freelance writing. But I want these 10 writing blogs to win. In no particular order …

1. Jeff Goins of Jeff Goins Writer

I love this blog because Jeff writes from the heart and is ubber inspirational. Great. Stuff. Always.

2. Sean Platt of Ghostwriter Dad

Sean, by his own admission, has gone from a struggling freelance writer to a place where he is now an authority on how to build your own writing business.

His advice is practical and he tells it like it is. I am especially impressed with his direction and work ethic. That really resonates with my values. On top of it, he is a great guy. :)

3. Oni of Young Pre Pro

I came to know about Oni when I started looking into guest posting. And he has a wealth of information to share in this area plus tips on writing for money.

He probably won’t remember but I had a brief exchange of emails once where he very kindly and patiently replied to my long list of questions that most big bloggers shy away from. That converted me.

Did I mention he is almost half my age?

4. Melissa Donovan of Writing Forward

Could you follow any grammar blog?

Yes you could and you should – Melissa’s is fantastic. Plus she writes about other cool stuff as well such as craft and genres and what not. Highly recommended.

5. Judy Dunn of Cats Eye Writer

This blog is a pleasure to read. Delightful mix of writing and blogging advice. Well done, Judy. :)

6. Suzannah of Write it Sideways

Suzannah writes about writing fiction. Although, not one of my goals for the moment, I still read hers because much of what she writes about also applies to other forms. Plus, she is an extremely nice person.

7. Marya of Writing Happiness

err … this is me. I think I should win, what do you think?

Now on to the heavy weights …

8. Joanna Penn of The Creative Penn

No introductions about her are necessary. She is the go-to person for self publishing, establishing your online author’s platform, and all things writing. Must read for people who have a book in them.

9. Carol Tice of Make a Living Writing

One cool lady. Very savvy when it comes to freelance writing work – her tips are always spot on.

10. Linda F & Diana B of The Renegade Writer

Queens of freelance. Enough said.

James Chartrand of Men with Pens

If these guys (or gals) win, should copyblogger win too? Shouldn’t these guys be judging instead of running? Come on, give it to upcoming bloggers who need this for so many reasons.

Nominate Writing Happiness as your favourite Top 10 Writing Blog for 2011

A big thank you to those of you who already nominated Writing Happiness. Thank you so much, I can’t even put that in words.

If you haven’t voted for anyone, and if I haven’t killed any chance already by pointing you towards these fantastic bloggers, do nominate me. It would mean a lot.

A lot.

Go here and leave a comment with your choice (me!) and your reason (how fantastic I am!) :)

Have a great day every one. And happy reading! :)

I reckon they would be a part of the judging panel, just like last year. There are so many new and upcoming blogs that deserve this more.

Anyway, hey, have you entered to win the free blog critique? I remembered you were interested and I would really appreciate the support. Check my post before this one. :)

      Thanks Josh.

  2. Thanks so much for posting this list, Marya. I will definitely check out these blogs. :)

  5. Woah! Marya I just checked the WTD website and it looks like you’re going great guns! You may or may not win but the thing is you are making a difference in the lives of many who appreciate you not just for your writing tips but also for your extroverted, fun personality!

    Well done!

Mehmuhdah, at the risk of sounding cheesy, this was the reason why I started Writing Happiness. Yes I might lose – and there’s a very good chance I would – it still means the world to me. Ultimately, I want to write a book but this is my first dream of validation in the online world.

Hey, would you leave a nomination for me? I would be really grateful.

Check your email, I have sent you one, better late than never eh?

      Marya

      • Nomination done! Yep, just got ur email, will write back shortly. Tc

Mehmudah, I love the way you have described me. That has simply put the biggest smile on my face today.

“persuasive, energetic, sensible and intuitive.” I couldn’t ask for anything more really. *Hugs*

  6. Great resource. Writing your thoughts is an easy way but technical writing is another thing that any online writer should really know.

    • marya

I agree. There are probably blogs out there that cater for this sort of writing but as this is a very specialized field, I would think that audiences are not wide. What do you think?

  7. Hi Marya

Thanks for the links. Great content. Some great choices.

    • marya

Hey Susan, what a great tag line – “copy with a conscience’. Love it! :) I will surely explore your blog further asap.

Thanks for liking the list. Hope you find something of value in there. Let me know if you discover any gems?

      Marya

  9. I like to point no. 1 that friends describe above, write from the heart and inspiration. I like your articles original article:)

  10. Is the gentleman from Men with Pens an honorable mention (because you listed 11 blogs) ?

    • marya

Something like that – I picked my favourites and I will stick by what I said before. Thanks for your comment. :)

  11. Thanks for these resources! I already follow some of these blogs so the others will be great to check out. We design more than 60 custom WordPress themes a year (hoping to do more) and every time a project gets stuck it’s with their content! Hopefully I’ll find more great resources on these blogs to share with our clients!

  12. Oni Is just simply great with a huge knowledge and experience in writing. I owe him. True excellence.
By the way I just cam to know about writing happiness from writedone finalist list. Nice to see this writing blog too.

    • marya

Hi Mark. I follow Oni as well. He is great (and almost half my age! ). He has tons of nominations at WTD. Fingers crossed he sprinkles some of his magic over my blog too. Drop by again ok?

      Marya

  13. Yes This is the reason I am quite impressed with Oni. He has just completed 18 years on this 22nd december and It seems that he is too much matured already.

    All the best you too.

  14. Very good post. I will definitely be taking a look at some of these blogs later tonight!

I recently wrote a list of 10 blogs I find very interesting and insightful if you would like to check that out – http://bit.ly/UVn7WQ

  15. I have just started a blog on my daily rantings and i think creative writing is way different than technical. You got sort of template when it comes to technical writing but i think there is no template in creative writing. So i think these blogs would be great learning resource.
